The Gameboy Color was a handheld video game console by Nintendo that allowed gameplay in full color, and nullified Sega's taunts over the Game Boy's "Puke Green Screen". Despite being significantly more portable than its predecessor, it still featured an impressive library of games, and it was backward compatible with all original Game Boy games. It also supported a higher color resolution and more powerful hardware, including a processor that was approximately twice as fast as the original Game Boy, and triple the amount of memory.
Its internal processor was a hybrid Intel 8080 and Zilog Z80 workalike (with a few extra bit manipulation instructions), a CPU with a clock speed of 8 MHz, and three times as much system RAM as the original Game Boy. The Gameboy Color had a screen resolution of 160x144 pixels, and it could be powered by two AA batteries for up to thirty hours of gameplay.
A special feature of the Gameboy Color was that it could use an infrared port to link games together, whereas the original Game Boy used a wire for this purpose. The Game Boy Color was the only handheld gaming console developed by Nintendo to support this feature, and it only worked with other Game Boy Color devices or with the Super Game Boy.
One of the most popular and recognizable Game Boy Color games is Tetris, a game that was developed for both the original Game Boy and the Game Boy Color. However, most of the 576 games available for Game Boy Color were developed exclusively for this system.
